2010 Internship Programs Emphasize Core Values, Multimedia

PRINCETON, N.J. (Sept. 18, 2009) -- The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's four 2010 internship programs -- multimedia, news and sports copy editing and business reporting --maintain
traditional values while evolving with the industry. Rich Holden, the Fund's executive director, said, "Copy editing, as many might suggest, is not a dying art. It may be lost, but not dying. The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund has devoted more than 40 years to finding the right students to fill the needs of the nation's newspapers. Accuracy and fairness are as important today as they were in 1968. Our interns are trained to make sure that the highest standards are upheld, regardless of the platform in which news is presented."

All interns will attend week-long training before reporting for work. Last summer, training courses for 79 interns were conducted at Temple University; the University of Nebraska, Lincoln; Penn State University; the University of Missouri, Columbia; the University of Texas, Austin; Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, and  New York University.

The training cost to participating news organizations is $1,200, a 33% reduction  from 2009, for news and sports editing interns and $1,000 for multimedia and business reporting interns. This represents less than 50 percent of the overall program cost, with the rest provided by DJNF. The fund provides a $1,000 scholarship to interns returning to school after the successful completion of their summer internship.

News organizations agree to pay each intern a minimum salary of $350 a week for at least 10 weeks.
For Media Managers

Applicants in all majors from college sophomores to graduate students are invited to apply. Students apply on the Web site by clicking on Programs, then Editing or Business Reporting in the left menu. Each student must register as an Intern Applicant in order to login and complete a form. A student may be eligible to apply for all four programs. The editing programs require a one-hour editing test. A list of professor offering the exam is at Review Monitors List. Business reporting applicants must take a similar exam and upload a PDF containing three to five clips. Professional journalists and recent graduates are ineligible. The application deadline is Nov. 2.

Interns are selected and assigned in early December after a review by training program directors and professional journalists.
